Our history

John F Marshall began in 2009 with a clear focus on poultry and agri equipment for South African conditions. From the early years on this domain to the team and project support we have today, the business has kept the same practical aim: supply the right equipment and stand behind it.

2009: the start in poultry equipment

John Frederick Marshall founded the business in 2009 from the Jet Park, Boksburg base, working with poultry producers who needed practical equipment that could handle local conditions. The first work centred on laying-hen cages, incubators, brooders, feeders and drinkers, with early projects often serving farms that were growing fast and needed reliable advice as much as hardware. From the start, the focus was not on selling a box and moving on, but on matching equipment to house size, bird numbers and day-to-day labour on site.

Those early years also shaped the way the business still works today. Many customers were operating in areas where water pressure, power cuts and dust had to be considered from the first drawing and not after installation. That meant careful site planning, sensible layouts and straightforward commissioning that a farm team could understand and use straight away.

2010 to 2013: building a wider poultry service

As the work grew, the business added more support around the supply of equipment. It became common for customers to ask for house layouts, installation supervision and operator training in the same project, because that is what keeps a poultry unit running properly after the team leaves the site. During this period, the business also started handling spare parts and maintenance planning so growers could reduce delays when a feed line, drinker line or control item needed attention.

  • Site planning for new poultry houses and extensions
  • Equipment selection based on flock size and operating budget
  • Supervision during installation and first run-up
  • Training for operators and house teams
  • Maintenance schedules and spares support

This was also the period when the company earned more repeat work. Farmers who had started with one house often came back for another unit or asked for advice on changes after their first cycle. That kind of call back business helped set the tone for the years that followed.

2014 to 2018: from equipment supply to turnkey projects

By the middle years, the business moved beyond single-item supply and into fuller poultry project delivery. Customers wanted one team that could help with house layouts, equipment selection, commissioning and handover, rather than trying to coordinate several suppliers on their own. John F Marshall answered that need by developing turnkey poultry projects that brought the planning, equipment and support together under one roof.

The poultry side remained central, but the scope widened. Incubators and brooders stayed important for hatchery and chick-rearing work, while abattoir equipment and processing room fitout became part of larger production sites that needed a cleaner, better organised flow. In many cases, projects had to be planned around municipal rules, access roads, drainage and the realities of load-shedding, so the team kept an eye on what could be maintained locally and what could be supported with spares on hand.

  • Turnkey poultry projects for new and expanding operations
  • Processing room fitout for cleaner workflow
  • Abattoir equipment supply and support
  • Expansion upgrades for live sites

2020 to 2023: keeping projects moving through hard operating conditions

The 2020 to 2023 period brought tighter planning across agriculture and industry. Power interruptions, supply delays and pressure on transport all made it more important to have equipment ordered properly and installed without wasted time. During these years the business kept focusing on practical support, from maintenance programmes to operator training, so customers could keep production moving even when conditions were not ideal.

As poultry producers looked for better control of costs and downtime, the company’s service work became just as important as the original supply. Teams needed clear advice on feed handling, drinker setup, spare parts and routine checks. The company also continued to serve projects across Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, North West, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal, with work adjusted to the needs of each site, from humid coastal conditions to drier inland farms. It was never about a single standard answer, because each house and each team needed something slightly differant.

Today: a Gauteng base with national project reach

Today, John F Marshall continues from its Jet Park, Boksburg base as a South African supplier with poultry projects across the country. The business is still led by John Frederick Marshall, with a team that covers operations, projects, technical sales, service, procurement and training. That mix allows the company to support customers from the first conversation through to commissioning and aftercare.

  • Lerato Mokoena, Operations Manager
  • Sibusiso Dlamini, Projects Coordinator
  • Anika van der Merwe, Technical Sales Manager
  • Thabo Nkosi, Service Supervisor
  • Nadine Jacobs, Procurement Officer
  • Musa Cele, Training and Support Lead

For many customers, the value now lies in continuity. The same business name, the same practical approach and the same kind of straight advice have carried through from the earlier years on this domain to the present day. That continuity matters when a site needs a spare part, a new house layout or help getting a processing room ready for use.

What has stayed the same since the early years

Even as the company has grown, a few things have stayed steady. The work still starts with listening to what the site needs, not pushing equipment that does not fit. The aim is still to keep poultry operations simple enough to manage, and dependable enough to support real production on the ground.

  • Clear advice based on the size and type of operation
  • Support for both new builds and upgrades
  • Local knowledge of South African site conditions
  • Training, spares and maintenance after installation

That is why the history of John F Marshall is not just a timeline. It is the story of a business that started with poultry equipment in 2009 and kept building on that base, one project at a time, for farms and producers who need the job done properly.
